CHIROPRACTIC CARE

The Seib Approach - The Method Used to Build Lasting Confidence & Fearless Movement

Chiropractic Care can be an extemely powerful tool to help patients achieve their goals & live the life they've always wanted. At Seib health & Performance, our approach was created over years of personal challanges & clinical development.

Seib Health & Performance was originally founded by Jordan Seib as Seib Chiropractic. Olivia Klianis came on board and co-founded the evolution - Seib Health & Performance. This is where the Seib Approach was Born.

Through years of frequent & recurrent injuries, Jordan spent countless hours trialing different forms of care to help put his injuries into the past. Through these experiences he began utilising what he found to work with his patients. Where he began to develop his system to build lasting confidence & fearless movement in everyone.

This approach was further evolved when Olivia came on board. Going through her own sporting injuries & other health concerns she had developed a whole body approach to care, which acknowledged the root cause of pain may lay in an alternative area to the one in pain.

Jordan & Olivia combined these two separate styles into the Seib approach, which is built on 3 pillars of care:

Recover - Move - Perform

It's a whole body approach to pain & injury management, ensuring a clear plan can be developed with every patient. Then guiding them through each pillar gradually exposing the body - from early stage rehab to late stage rehab & beyond - allowing for a life full of activity & free from the fear of pain.

Our goal is simple: To empower lasting confidence & fearless movement, giving you the tools & knowledge to take your life back - allowing you to hit the gym & be active with the kids free from the fear of pain.

Understanding How Pain Changes Movement

Pain is not what you think...

Many view pain as a negative. It's a hindrance to life and stops you from doing what you love. One thing we learnt through years of our own personal struggle with pain & years of helping hundreds of patients recover fast & perform at their best, is that pain is an alarm system. It lets you know when an issue may be present.

The alarm system is there simply as a warning. It's not the problem, it's just alerting you to the presence of one.

Pain can represent:

  • Damage to the system

  • That you could potentially be in danger

  • An area may not be struggling to keep up with demands

The body changes its movement in response to the alarm by:

  • Reducing your overall movement

  • increase muscle tension to help protect from potential injury

  • Create stiff or uncomfortable movement

  • Alter your natural movement strategy

These are protective responses to help your body manage & deal with pain. It's like hitting the brakes and slowing everything down to avoid an accident from happening.

Why Your Body Moves Differently

When an injury occurs or you experience pain your 'default' movement pattern changes. The body creates alternate patterns of movement to help you get through your life. These alternate patterns are why you are still able to do tasks while in pain.

These could be things like:

  • Not bending your knee while walking after hurting your knee

  • Squeezing your shoulders when stressed

  • Using your left hand to pick up your coffee after spraining your right wrist

Adaptations of your movement patterns like the ones above are brilliant short term solutions to minimising pain. Left unchecked they can create new problems or keep you in pain.

What Altered Movement Can Lead To

Adaptations in movement are normal but some can cause problems; we call them maladaptive strategies.

Maladaptive strategies usually come at a cost:

  • Some areas are overloaded

  • Some areas take a vacation

  • Focuses stress into a small area of the body

  • Loose the natural efficiancy of the body

  • Smoothly coordinated movement can reduce

Over time this can result in:

  • New issues arising

  • A cycle pain cycle bouncing from one pain to the next

  • Lead to seemingly unrelated issues years down the track

  • Long term use of maladaptive strategies that become hard to break

Usually these strategies are there underlying, hidden away & not noticed. This leads to a slow build up over time where you feel like something is a bit off, or feels a little different than usual but you can't put your finger on it.

We see a lot of the time that our patients don't even realise these maladaptive strategies are present until pain hits. Over such a long period of time it can be almost impossible to determine what truely caused your pain. That's where we find a lot of answers in your previous injuries & your personal seasons of life.

It's Not Just About Strength, It's about Coordination

Where a lot of people with reccurent pain have been lead a stray is in the focus of their rehabilitation. Generally you're told to focus on getting one group of muscles stronger and it will fix everything. While this can help, in our experience we see many people miss building back the coordination of strength.

Think of your body like a football team, in order for the team to win each player needs to:

  • Do their job role

  • Time their movements with their teammates

  • Adapt & adjust quickly depending on what is happening around them

  • Change their intensity to match the tides of the match

This is how your body need to work. They need to work as a team that's in sync with one another.

When a muscle gets injured or pain is present, their is a problem & the body needs to find a way around it to get the job done. Exactly like a football team needs to find a way to win if they find themselves a man down. When the balance of the team gets thrown off usually the distribution of workload also gets skewed towards certain players. The body is no different.

This is how you can develop maladaptive strategies.

How We Identify Maladaptive Strategies

In order to identify any maladaptive strategies that are present, we utilise testing called Force Steadiness. This type of testing allows us to gain insight into how your body may be coordinating on a day to day basis. Not just when you're at the gym or going for a run but your every day small movements like:

  • Walking up the stairs

  • Picking up your cup of coffee

  • Hopping in your car

  • Getting up from a sitting position

  • Walking up or down hills or over uneven ground

Each of these tasks above require strength to get the job done, but they also require fast and efficient coordination of the body. Allowing for accurate & smooth movement that distributes load across the whole body.

This is what force steadiness testing helps us identify. We are able to then tailor our treatment & rehab in a way that seems different to many other health professionals but is quite specific to your force steadiness testing.

How The Seib Approach Helps You Build Lasting Confidence & Fearless Movement

Our approach can seem different as it doesn't just focus on cracking your back or building strength in one area. We focus on a whole body approach utilising the neccessary tools to build back the efficient coordination of your body.

This is built off our 3 pillars of care, guiding our 3 step approach to take you from in pain to taking life head on without fear.

Recover: The first step guiding you towards being pain free

We utilise a blend of hands on techniques & early stage rehabilitation to help reduce your pain quickly & show your body that it's safe to move. We do this by:

  • Not chasing pain by listening to you & identifying the root cause of your problem

  • We talk with you & not at you, allowing us to develop a plan together.

  • Utilising hands on techniques that works with your system to reduce pain and return to safe movement

  • A mix of quality mobility & high tension exercises that encourage your body to return to it's natural way of movement

Move: Building confident movement by synchronising the team

The second stage aims to build you back into your daily activities, encouraging movement. This stage has a heavy focus on making the changes in pain stick through:

  • Dynamic rehabilitation exercises that give your body no choice but to tolerate load, pushing your boundaries

  • Targeted hands on techniques that clean up any remaining areas of pain

  • Encouraging progress through activity, giving you the confidence to continue working through the plan

  • Continuing to progress you thorugh a graded exposure approach, helping you go beyond just being pain free

Perform: Creating Fearless Movement & Lasting Confidence

Once you're pain free, our care for you doesn’t end there. The final stage bridges the gap between the clinic & real life.  Giving your body the tools to deal with anything life thorws at you. We do this by:

  • Taking you thorugh our high level rehab that prepares you for worst case scenario

  • Expose any hidden limitations that might cause future issues

  • Finishing your plan with sustainable peak performance - allowing you to play with the kids, hit the gym or be the MVP on game day.
